Maureen Judge is a Canadian documentary filmmaker and television producer. Her work frequently explores themes of family, relationships, and the experiences of young women.
Biography
Judge was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1955, one of eight children. As a child, she lived in Montreal, Kingston (Ontario), and Chicago (Illinois) before moving to Toronto in 1967. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in science and philosophy, and in 1982 she received a Master of Arts degree in cinema studies from New York University. She resides in Toronto with her husband and has two grown children.
Career
Judge has directed, produced, and written numerous documentary films, television series, and dramatic shorts. Her best-known works include My Millennial Life (2016), which won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Documentary Program, and Unveiled: The Mother/Daughter Relationship (1997), which won the Genie Award for Best Short Documentary.
In 2002, she created and produced the television documentary series Family Secrets (13 episodes). In 2006, she co-created (with Tina Hahn) the Canadian poetry documentary series Heart of a Poet, which aired on Bravo! for two seasons.
In 2008, Judge produced the documentary FLicKeR, which won the Hot Docs Special Jury Prize for a Canadian Feature Length Documentary and the Best Film on International Art award at the Era New Horizons Film Festival in Poland. Her 2010 film Mom's Home was nominated for the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social-Political Documentary at the Gemini Awards. Other notable documentaries include And We Knew How to Dance: Women and World War I (produced by the National Film Board of Canada), In My Parents' Basement (2002), Living Dolls (2013), and 17 And Life Doesn't Wait (2019).
Judge was a founding member of CineAction Magazine in 1986, contributing an article on the film Death Watch to its first issue. She has taught film studies and production at York University, Humber College, and Sheridan College in Toronto.
