He is best known for his long‑term playing career with the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) and for subsequent coaching roles at various AFL clubs and state‑level teams.

Knights debuted for Richmond in the 1989 AFL season and played 268 senior games for the club until his retirement at the end of the 2004 season.
