Matihani is a rural municipality (गाउँपालिका) located in the Mahottari District of Madhesh Province, Nepal. Situated in the Terai region, it is known for its cultural and religious significance, particularly due to its ancient temples and a notable annual fair.
Location and Geography
Matihani is positioned in the southern part of Mahottari District, bordering the Indian state of Bihar. The terrain is predominantly flat, characteristic of the Terai plains, and is fertile, suitable for agriculture. The municipality is easily accessible by road, connecting it to district headquarters Jaleshwar and other major towns in the region. Its proximity to the Indo-Nepal border facilitates cross-border interactions and trade.
Demographics
As a part of the Madhesh Province, the population of Matihani is largely composed of Maithili-speaking communities, along with other ethnic groups common in the Terai. The primary language spoken is Maithili, followed by Nepali and Bhojpuri. Agriculture is the main occupation for a significant portion of the population, supplemented by small businesses and cross-border trade.
History and Significance
Matihani holds considerable historical and religious importance. It is particularly revered for the
Laxmi Narayan Temple (also known as Matihani Math), an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi. The temple complex is not only a place of worship but also a center for religious learning and traditional practices. The name "Matihani" itself is believed to derive from a legendary account involving Sita, a prominent figure in the Hindu epic Ramayana, who is said to have applied 'mati' (earth/clay) from this place during her wedding preparations, giving it sacred connotations.
Culture and Festivals
The most significant cultural event in Matihani is the
Matihani Mela (fair), which is held annually during the Kartik Purnima festival (October/November). This fair attracts thousands of devotees and pilgrims from Nepal and neighboring India. It is a vibrant celebration marked by religious rituals, traditional music, dance, and a bustling marketplace. The fair is deeply rooted in the region's spiritual traditions and serves as a major cultural gathering point.
Administration
Matihani Rural Municipality was established in 2017 as part of the local level restructuring process in Nepal. This involved merging several former Village Development Committees (VDCs) to form a larger administrative unit aimed at decentralizing governance and improving public service delivery. The local government is responsible for infrastructure development, public health, education, and other essential services within its jurisdiction.
