The program is organized and hosted by the Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (the provincial regulatory body for engineering and geoscience) in collaboration with several post-secondary institutions, including the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
The competition is structured to promote problem-solving skills and interest in mathematics-related fields. It typically consists of three stages: school-level preparations, regional tournaments held at various college and university campuses, and a final provincial championship. The competition format generally includes individual rounds, such as the "Blitz" and "Bull's-eye" rounds which focus on speed and accuracy, and a "Co-op" round that requires team-based collaboration to solve complex problems.
The event was originally established as a regional branch of the American-based MATHCOUNTS program. In the early 2000s, the organization transitioned into an independent, locally managed entity and was rebranded as MathChallengers to better align with the British Columbia provincial curriculum and academic calendar.
