Matei Millo (1809 – 1860) was a Romanian actor, playwright, and theatre director who is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Romanian theatre. Born in Iași, Moldavia, Millo received early education in his native city before pursuing further studies in Vienna, where he was exposed to contemporary European theatrical practices.
In the 1830s Millo returned to the Romanian principalities and began organizing theatrical productions that incorporated Romanian language and folk traditions. In 1834 he founded a travelling theatre troupe that performed in Iași, Bârlad, and other Moldavian towns, contributing to the diffusion of theatrical culture beyond the capital. After relocating to Bucharest, Millo continued to direct and act in performances at the nascent Romanian theatre institutions, notably the Teatrul Național (National Theatre).
As a playwright, Millo authored several original comedies and melodramas, and he also translated a number of works from French and German into Romanian, facilitating the introduction of European dramatic literature to Romanian audiences. His productions were characterized by an emphasis on realistic acting techniques and the use of vernacular speech, which helped shape a distinctive Romanian stage style.
Millo’s contributions were recognized during his lifetime; he received patronage from prominent cultural and political figures and was later commemorated for his role in establishing a professional theatre tradition in Romania. His legacy endures in the history of Romanian performing arts, where he is often cited as a foundational figure in the development of national dramatic culture.
