Maryland Route 396 (MD 396) is a former state highway located in Montgomery County, Maryland. The route followed a portion of Massachusetts Avenue, extending from the boundary of the District of Columbia northwest to its terminus at MD 614 (Goldsboro Road) in the Bethesda area.
Established in the mid-1930s, MD 396 served as a primary suburban connector between Washington, D.C., and the residential communities of Montgomery County. Throughout its existence as a state-maintained road, it functioned as a multi-lane undivided highway.
In the late 1990s, the Maryland State Highway Administration reached an agreement with Montgomery County to transfer several state-maintained roadways to local jurisdiction. As part of this highway transfer exchange, MD 396 was decommissioned as a state route around 1999. Since its removal from the state highway system, the roadway has been maintained by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation. While it no longer carries the MD 396 designation, the road continues to be known as Massachusetts Avenue.
