Marty Holah (born 4 March 1976) is a New Zealand former rugby union player who played as a lock. He earned 32 caps for the New Zealand national team, the All Blacks, between 1999 and 2007, and had a professional club career that included playing for the Waikato provincial team, the Chiefs in Super Rugby, and the Sale Sharks in the English Premiership.
Early life and education
Marty Holah was born in Gisborne, New Zealand. He attended Gisborne Boys' High School, where he began playing rugby. Following secondary school, he moved to the Waikato region to further his rugby development and attended the University of Waikato.
Provincial and Super Rugby career
Holah debuted for Waikato in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) in 1997. He became a regular starter and contributed to Waikato's NPC titles in 1998 and 2005. In Super Rugby, he played for the Chiefs from 1997 to 2007, accumulating over 100 appearances. Known for his line‑out expertise, physicality, and work rate, Holah was a key component of the Chiefs' forward pack.
International career
Holah was first selected for the All Blacks in 1999, making his test debut against Wales. He was part of the 1999 Rugby World Cup squad, appearing in several pool matches. Over an eight‑year international career, Holah earned 32 test caps and scored two tries. He was a regular member of the squad during the 2002 and 2005 Tri Nations tournaments and was selected for the 2007 Rugby World Cup, where New Zealand finished as runners‑up.
Club career in England
In 2007, Holah signed with Sale Sharks in the English Premiership. He played for Sale until his retirement from professional rugby in 2013, making more than 150 appearances. During his tenure, Sale reached the Premiership final in the 2005–06 season and the European Challenge Cup final in 2008.
Post‑playing career
After retiring, Holah returned to New Zealand and has been involved in rugby coaching and development programs, particularly focusing on youth and forward play. He has also participated in charitable initiatives and rugby community events.
