Martinez is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States, situated at the southern tip of the Carquinez Strait where the Sacramento and San Joaquín Rivers enter the San Francisco Bay. As of the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 37,234, making it the county seat and one of the principal suburban communities of the San Francisco Bay Area.

History
The area now occupied by Martinez was originally inhabited by the Coast Miwok peoples. In the early 19th century, Spanish and Mexican land grants established the Rancho El Pinole, which was later owned by Don Ygnacio Martinez. The settlement that grew around his adobe homestead was named “Martinez” after him. Following the California Gold Rush, the community expanded as a transportation hub, benefiting from its strategic location on the Carquinez Strait. Martinez was incorporated as a city on August 23 1913.

Martinez lies at latitude 38.0194° N and longitude 122.1340° W. The city covers a total area of approximately 13.08 square miles (33.89 km²), of which 12.55 square miles (32.50 km²) is land and 0.53 square miles (1.39 km²) (4.1 %) is water. The city’s terrain is characterized by gently rolling hills that rise to the east and a waterfront along the Carquinez Strait to the west.
