Martin Tomczyk (born December 7, 1981) is a German former professional racing driver who is best known for his successful career in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM), where he won the championship in 2011. Following his racing retirement, he transitioned into management and ambassadorial roles within motorsport.
Early Life and Career Born in Rosenheim, Germany, Tomczyk began his motorsport journey in karting before advancing to single-seater formulas. He competed in the Formula BMW ADAC championship in 1999 and 2000, finishing third in the latter season.
Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) Tomczyk made his debut in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) in 2001 with Audi. He spent a decade with the manufacturer, becoming one of the series' most experienced drivers.
- 2001-2010 (Audi): During these years, Tomczyk consistently competed for Audi, initially with customer teams like Abt Sportsline and later with factory-backed efforts. He secured multiple podium finishes and race victories but the overall championship title remained elusive.
- 2011 (Audi - Phoenix Racing): A pivotal season saw Tomczyk move from the high-profile Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline to the independent Audi Sport Team Phoenix. Driving an older-specification Audi A4 DTM, he delivered a remarkable performance, clinching three wins and ultimately securing his first and only DTM championship title against expectations.
- 2012-2016 (BMW): Following his championship success, Tomczyk made a significant move to BMW as the manufacturer returned to the DTM in 2012. He continued to be a competitive force for BMW until his departure from the series at the end of the 2016 season.
Post-DTM Career After concluding his DTM career, Tomczyk shifted his focus to endurance racing. He competed for BMW in various international championships, including the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the IMSA SportsCar Championship, participating in prestigious events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Later Roles and Management Martin Tomczyk has taken on several ambassadorial and management roles within BMW Motorsport. In 2024, he was appointed as the team principal for Schubert Motorsport, a prominent team competing in the DTM, marking his return to the championship in a leadership capacity.
