Martin Sonnenberg (born October 23, 1978) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes, Calgary Flames, and Phoenix Coyotes.
Early Life and Junior Career Born in Richmond, British Columbia, Sonnenberg played junior hockey in the Western Hockey League (WHL) for the Saskatoon Blades. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 9th round, 252nd overall, in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
Professional Career Sonnenberg began his professional career in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1998–99 season. Known for his hard work and gritty playing style, Sonnenberg primarily played a depth forward role, contributing energy and physicality.
Over his NHL career, he played 120 regular season games, recording 7 goals and 10 assists for 17 points, along with 52 penalty minutes. His NHL career spanned parts of six seasons with four different organizations:
- Pittsburgh Penguins (1998–2000): Made his NHL debut.
- Carolina Hurricanes (2000–2001): Traded from Pittsburgh.
- Calgary Flames (2002–2004): Spent two seasons, including the 2003–04 season where the Flames reached the Stanley Cup Finals, though Sonnenberg did not play in the playoffs that year.
- Phoenix Coyotes (2005–2006): Played his final NHL games after the 2004–05 lockout.
In addition to his NHL stints, Sonnenberg had a productive AHL career, playing for several teams including the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Lowell Lock Monsters, Saint John Flames, San Antonio Rampage, and Springfield Falcons.
Post-NHL Career and Retirement After his last NHL season, Sonnenberg played one season in Europe during 2006–07 for the Malmö Redhawks in the Swedish Elitserien before retiring from professional hockey in 2008.
