Martin Lippens

Martin Lippens (13 July 1934 – 23 August 2016) was a Belgian professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He is most noted for his long association with R.S.C. Anderlecht, where he spent the majority of his senior career, and for representing the Belgium national team.

Early life and youth career
Born in Lier, Belgium, Lippens began playing football at a young age. He joined the youth academy of R.S.C. Anderlecht in the early 1950s, developing through the club’s ranks before making his first‑team debut.

Club career
Lippens made his senior debut for Anderlecht in 1954. Over a 12‑year spell with the club (1954–1966), he made over 300 league appearances and scored 27 goals. During his tenure, Anderlecht won multiple Belgian First Division titles (including the 1955–56, 1958–59, 1961–62, and 1963–64 seasons) and secured the Belgian Cup in 1964–65. Lippens was recognised for his defensive midfield capabilities, tactical awareness, and leadership on the pitch. After leaving Anderlecht, he played briefly for K. Beerschot V.A.C. before retiring from professional football in 1968.

He participated in the qualification campaigns for the 1958 FIFA World Cup and the 1962 FIFA World Cup, though Belgium did not qualify for either tournament. He was noted for his consistency and work rate in the midfield for the national side.

Post‑playing career
Following retirement, Lippens remained involved in football as a coach and scout. He served as an assistant coach for Anderlecht and later worked in youth development, contributing to the identification and nurturing of young Belgian talent.

Personal life and legacy
Martin Lippens was married and had children; he maintained a low public profile after his football career. He is remembered in Belgian football history for his loyalty to Anderlecht and his contributions to the national team during a period of growth for Belgian football.
