Martin Hellman

Martin Edward Hellman (born October 22 1945) is an American cryptographer and computer scientist recognized for his pioneering contributions to public‑key cryptography. He is best known as the co‑inventor of the Diffie–Hellman key exchange protocol, a foundational method for establishing secure communications over an insecure channel.

Early life and education
Hellman was born in New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1966, followed by a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1968. He completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at MIT in 1971, under the supervision of Robert Bach, with a dissertation on optimal control theory.

Academic and research career
After receiving his doctorate, Hellman joined the faculty of Stanford University’s Department of Electrical Engineering (later Computer Science), where he served as a professor from 1971 until his retirement as professor emeritus in 2005. He has also held visiting positions at institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Oxford.

Key contributions

  • Diffie–Hellman key exchange: In collaboration with Whitfield Diffie, Hellman co‑authored the 1976 paper “New Directions in Cryptography,” which introduced the concept of public‑key cryptography and presented the Diffie–Hellman key exchange algorithm. This work fundamentally changed the field of cryptography and enabled secure communication protocols used worldwide.
  • Hellman–Kunz attacks: Along with his student John C. K. Lee and others, Hellman contributed to the analysis of cryptographic systems, including attacks on public‑key schemes that informed the development of more robust algorithms.
