Definition
Maroodi Jeex is a first‑level administrative region (gobol) in the self‑declared Republic of Somaliland, located in the northwestern part of the Horn of Africa. Its capital and largest city is Hargeisa, which also serves as the de facto capital of Somaliland.
Overview
- Geography: The region occupies the foothills of the Somali Plateau and transitions into the coastal plains of the Gulf of Aden. It is bordered by the Awdal region to the north, the Togdheer region to the east, the Sahil region to the west, and the Ethiopian Somali Regional State to the south.
- Area and Population: The region covers roughly 13,500 km² (5,200 sq mi). Official population figures are scarce due to limited census activity; estimates as of the early 2020s range between 1.3 million and 1.6 million inhabitants, the majority residing in and around Hargeisa.
- Administrative Subdivisions: Maroodi Jeex is divided into several districts, the most prominent being Hargeisa District, Edgosh District, Baligubale District, and Saaxil District. Local governance is exercised through district councils under the broader authority of the Somaliland Ministry of Interior.
- Economy: The regional economy is a mix of pastoralism, small‑scale agriculture, and urban commerce. Hargeisa functions as the principal commercial hub, hosting wholesale markets, service industries, and a growing informal sector. Livestock trade, especially goats and camels, remains a vital source of income for rural communities.
- Infrastructure: Hargeisa houses the Hargeisa International Airport, the main air gateway for Somaliland, and a network of paved roads linking the region to neighboring zones. Educational institutions include the University of Hargeisa and several secondary schools. Health services are concentrated in urban centers, while rural areas rely on clinics and mobile health units.
- Climate: Maroodi Jeex experiences a semi‑arid climate (BSh) with hot, dry summers and mild, slightly wetter winters. Average annual rainfall is typically below 400 mm, and temperatures in Hargeisa range from 15 °C (59 °F) in the coolest months to 35 °C (95 °F) during peak summer.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Maroodi Jeex” derives from Somali, where maroodi means “elephant” and jeex translates as “gap” or “pass.” The term historically referred to a natural pass through which elephants were once known to travel, a feature that gave the area its name. The designation was formalized in Somaliland’s post‑1991 administrative reorganization.
Characteristics
- Demographics: The population is predominately Somali, chiefly from the Isaaq clan-family, with minority groups including the Gadabursi and various Eurasian expatriate communities.
- Cultural Sites: Hargeisa hosts the Hargeisa War Memorial, the National Museum of Somaliland, and several mosques reflecting traditional Somali architecture.
- Political Significance: As the location of Somaliland’s political headquarters, Maroodi Jeex plays a central role in the region’s quest for international recognition and in internal governance matters.
