Marojejy National Park

Marojejy National Park is a protected area located in the northern region of Madagascar. Established in 1998, the park encompasses approximately 555 km² (214 mi²) of mountainous terrain, including the Marojejy Massif, which rises to 2,082 m (6,831 ft) at its highest peak, the second‑highest point on the island.

Geography and Climate
The park lies within the Sava and Analanjirofo regions and is characterized by a range of habitats from lowland rainforest to highland ericoid thickets. Annual rainfall exceeds 4,000 mm (157 in) on the windward slopes, making it one of the wettest areas in Madagascar. Temperatures vary with altitude, ranging from tropical conditions in the valleys to cooler, montane climates at higher elevations.

Biodiversity
Marojejy National Park is renowned for its high level of endemism and species richness:

  • Flora – The park protects over 1,600 plant species, including numerous endemic trees, orchids, and the threatened “Jumbo” tree (Brachylaena hatschbachii). The transition from lowland to highland vegetation supports distinct plant communities.
  • Fauna – More than 300 bird species have been recorded, with several endemics such as the Marojejy reed warbler (Acrocephalus marojejyensis). The park is a critical habitat for the critically endangered silky sifaka (Propithecus candidus) and other lemur species, including the black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata). Reptiles, amphibians, and insects are similarly diverse, with many species yet to be formally described.

Conservation Status
Marojevy National Park is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Rainforests of the Atsinanana” inscription (added in 2007). The park is managed by Madagascar’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with local communities and international conservation NGOs.

Threats
Key threats include illegal logging, slash‑and‑burn agriculture (tavy), and small‑scale mining, which lead to habitat degradation and fragmentation. Climate change poses additional risks through altered precipitation patterns and increased vulnerability of montane ecosystems.

Research and Monitoring
The park serves as a focal point for scientific research on biodiversity, ecology, and climate impacts. Ongoing monitoring programs track lemur populations, forest health, and the effectiveness of conservation interventions.

Tourism
Ecotourism is promoted through guided trekking routes that vary in difficulty, allowing visitors to experience the park’s varied ecosystems. Access is limited to protect sensitive habitats, and permits are required for entry. Tourist activities are regulated to minimize environmental disturbance.

Management Initiatives
Management strategies emphasize community engagement, environmental education, and alternative livelihood programs to reduce reliance on natural resources. Restoration projects aim to reforest degraded areas and improve connectivity between fragmented habitats.
