Marko Orlandić (23 September 1930 – 19 August 2023) was a Montenegrin politician who served in various high-ranking positions within the Socialist Republic of Montenegro and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He was a prominent figure in the League of Communists of Yugoslavia during the Cold War era, holding roles such as Prime Minister and President of Montenegro, as well as a member of the collective Presidency of Yugoslavia.
Early Life and Education Marko Orlandić was born on 23 September 1930 in Seoce, Bar, in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (modern-day Montenegro). He completed his education at the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade, graduating in 1956. His early career involved administrative roles within the economic sector before he fully entered politics.
Political Career Orlandić's political career began to ascend in the 1960s. He held several important positions within the Montenegrin and Yugoslav political structures:
- President of the Executive Council of Montenegro (Prime Minister): From 1974 to 1978, Orlandić served as the head of government for the Socialist Republic of Montenegro. During his tenure, he focused on economic development and infrastructure projects within the republic.
- President of the Presidency of Montenegro (Head of State): He served as the ceremonial head of state for Montenegro from 1983 to 1984.
- Member of the Presidency of Yugoslavia: As a representative of Montenegro, Orlandić was a member of the collective Presidency of Yugoslavia, the highest governing body of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, from 1984 to 1986.
- Ambassador to the Soviet Union: Prior to his high-level political roles, he also served as Yugoslavia's ambassador to the Soviet Union, a crucial diplomatic post during the Cold War.
