Mark Ibold (born October 17, 1962) is an American musician best known for his tenure as the bass guitarist for the influential indie rock band Pavement and his later work with the alternative rock group Sonic Youth.
Ibold joined Pavement in the early 1990s, shortly after the release of their debut album, Slanted and Enchanted. He remained a core member of the band throughout their most commercially successful and critically acclaimed period, performing on the albums Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten the Corners (1997), and Terror Twilight (1999). Following the band's dissolution in 1999, Ibold participated in their subsequent reunions in 2010 and 2022.
In 2006, Ibold joined Sonic Youth, initially as a touring bassist. He eventually became a full member and contributed to the band's final studio album, The Eternal (2009), before the group disbanded in 2011.
In addition to his work with Pavement and Sonic Youth, Ibold was a member of the band Free Kitten, a project featuring Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Julie Cafritz of Pussy Galore, and Yoshimi P-We of Boredoms. Outside of his musical career, Ibold has been involved in the New York City hospitality industry and has contributed to food-related publications.
