A maritime patrol aircraft (MPA), also referred to as a patrol aircraft, maritime reconnaissance aircraft, maritime surveillance aircraft, or patrol bomber, is a fixed-wing aircraft designed to operate for extended durations over water in maritime patrol roles. Its primary missions include anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and search and rescue (SAR).
Overview
MPAs are a key component of maritime surveillance, complementing satellites, ships, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and helicopters. To conduct ASW operations, they typically carry air-deployable sonobuoys, torpedoes, and are capable of extended flight at low altitudes. Modern MPAs can carry a crew of a dozen or more personnel, including relief flight crews, to operate equipment for twelve hours or longer at a time.
History
World War I
The first aircraft identifiable as maritime patrol aircraft were flown by the Royal Naval Air Service and the French Aéronautique Maritime during the First World War, primarily on anti-submarine patrols. Early patrols relied on airships (blimps and zeppelins), which were the only aircraft capable of staying aloft for ten-hour patrols with a useful payload. Shorter-range patrols were conducted by landplanes such as the Sopwith 1½ Strutter. Specialized patrol balloons, including the British SS-class airship (158 built), were produced. As the war progressed, purpose-built aircraft emerged, including small flying boats (FBA Type C), large floatplanes (Short 184), and flying boats (Felixstowe F.3). The success of long-range patrol aircraft led to the development of dedicated interceptors such as the Hansa-Brandenburg W.29.
World War II
Many World War II patrol aircraft were converted from bombers or airliners, e.g., the Lockheed Hudson (derived from the Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra). The British used obsolete bombers such as the Vickers Wellington and Armstrong-Whitworth Whitley, while the United States used the Douglas B-18 Bolo. Purpose-built types included the Consolidated PBY Catalina, the Short Sunderland, and the Martin PBM Mariner (Allied); and the Kawanishi H6K, Kawanishi H8K, Blohm & Voss BV 138, and Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor (Axis). The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was used to close the Mid-Atlantic Gap. Advancements in air-to-surface-vessel (ASV) radar and sonobuoys enhanced detection capabilities.
Cold War
Post-World War II, many MPAs were derived from civilian airliners, as jet bombers of the 1950s lacked the endurance and loiter speed required for ASW. Key aircraft included the Avro Shackleton (RAF), Hawker Siddeley Nimrod (RAF), Lockheed P2V Neptune and Lockheed P-3 Orion (U.S. Navy), Breguet 1150 Atlantic (NATO consortium), Ilyushin Il-38 (Soviet Union), Canadair CP-107 Argus and CP-140 Aurora (Canada), and the Shin Meiwa PS-1 and Kawasaki P-1 (Japan). The primary NATO threat during this period was the Soviet submarine fleet, countered by patrol aircraft operating across the GIUK Gap (Greenland–Iceland–UK). Beginning in 2013, the Boeing P-8 Poseidon, derived from the Boeing 737, began replacing the P-3 Orion in U.S. and other services.
Post-Cold War
Since the end of the Cold War, MPA fleets have been reduced in size. Remaining aircraft are used for search and rescue, counter-smuggling, anti-piracy, anti-poaching of marine life, enforcement of exclusive economic zones (EEZs), and law-of-the-sea enforcement.
Sensors
MPAs are typically equipped with a range of sensors:
- Radar (to detect surface vessels, submarine snorkels and periscopes, and wakes)
- Magnetic anomaly detector (MAD), typically mounted on a tail extension or towed, to detect ferrous metal in submarine hulls
- Sonobuoys (self-contained sonar transmitters/receivers deployed into the water)
- Electronic intelligence (ELINT) sensors for monitoring communications and radar emissions
- Infrared cameras / forward looking infrared (FLIR) for detecting heat sources
- Visual inspection, sometimes aided by searchlights or flares
Armament and Countermeasures
Early patrol aircraft carried bombs and machine guns. Depth charges became the standard ASW weapon during World War II. The Cold War introduced acoustic homing torpedoes and nuclear depth bombs. Modern MPAs can carry anti-ship missiles (e.g., AGM-84 Harpoon, Exocet), air-to-surface missiles (AGM-65 Maverick), cluster munitions, sea mines, and lightweight torpedoes. Self-protection systems include countermeasure dispensing systems and missile warning systems.
In addition to dedicated airframes, business jets have been modified for MPA missions, offering rapid deployment, extended range, long endurance, and lower life-cycle costs. The first generation of armed, business-jet-based MPA was unveiled by Elta Systems (Israel Aerospace Industries) in 2015.
