Definition
Marie-Louise Jaÿ (1838 – 1915) was a French businesswoman and philanthropist, best known as co‑founder and manager of the department store La Samaritaine in Paris.
Overview
Born Marie-Louise Drouet in Strasbourg, Alsace, she married Ernest Jaÿ in 1864. Together they expanded a small haberdashery shop into La Samaritaine, which opened its first dedicated building on the banks of the Seine in 1869. Under Marie‑Louise’s direction the store introduced innovative retail practices, such as fixed pricing, large-scale advertising, and employee welfare programs. By the early 20th century La Samaritaine had become one of France’s largest retailers, employing thousands and serving a broad clientele ranging from working‑class customers to the Parisian elite. After Ernest’s death in 1904, Marie‑Louise continued to oversee the business and expanded its charitable activities, funding schools, hospitals, and social housing projects.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Marie‑Louise” combines two common French female given names, Marie (derived from the Hebrew Μiriam, meaning “bitter” or “beloved”) and Louise (from the Germanic Hludwig, meaning “famous warrior”). The surname “Jaÿ” is of French origin; it is a variant of “Jaye” or “Jayi,” historically linked to families in the Alsace region.
