Maria Barroso (2 March 1917 – 7 July 2015) was a Portuguese actress and public figure who served as the First Lady of Portugal during the presidency of her husband, Mário Soares (1986–1996).
Early life and education
Born in São João da Madeira, Portugal, Barroso studied drama at the National Conservatory of Lisbon, where she trained for a career in theatre.
Acting career
Barroso began her professional work in the 1930s, performing in a range of theatrical productions and later appearing in Portuguese film and television. Her repertoire included classical and contemporary Portuguese plays, and she was recognized for her contributions to the national cultural scene.
Marriage and role as First Lady
In 1949, Barroso married Mário Soares, a leading figure in the Portuguese Socialist Party who would become Prime Minister (1976–1978, 1983–1985) and later President (1986–1996). As First Lady, Barroso accompanied the president on official state visits, promoted Portuguese cultural heritage, and supported charitable initiatives, particularly those related to education, health, and the arts.
Honours and legacy
Barroso received several Portuguese and foreign decorations, among them the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry (Portugal) for her service to the nation’s cultural and social development. She remained an active advocate for the arts and social causes until her death in Lisbon in 2015.
