Margus Allikmaa (born 28 July 1961) is an Estonian cultural manager and former politician who has held prominent roles in Estonian cultural institutions and public broadcasting.
Early Life and Education
Margus Allikmaa was born on 28 July 1961. He pursued higher education in cultural education at the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute, which later became Tallinn University.Career in Theatre Management
Allikmaa began his career in cultural management in the early 1990s.- From 1991 to 1994, he served as the director of the Estonian Puppet Theatre (NUKU Theatre).
- Following this, he led the Estonian Drama Theatre, one of Estonia's most significant theatrical institutions, as its director from 1994 to 2002.
Political Career
A member of the Estonian Centre Party, Allikmaa entered national politics at the beginning of the 21st century.- He served as the Minister of Culture of Estonia from 2002 to 2003 in the government of Prime Minister Siim Kallas.
Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR)
After his political tenure, Allikmaa took on a crucial role in the Estonian media landscape.- In 2004, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Eesti Rahvusringhääling (ERR), the Estonian Public Broadcasting company.
- During his thirteen-year leadership from 2004 to 2017, he oversaw significant developments, including the merger of Eesti Televisioon (ETV), Eesti Raadio (ER), and the Estonian News Agency (ETA) into the unified ERR. This period was instrumental in shaping Estonia's public media sector.
- He also served on the Board of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), an alliance of public service media organizations, contributing to broader European media policy.
