Mardakan

Mardakan (Azerbaijani: Mərdəkan) is a settlement and resort town on the Absheron Peninsula, Azerbaijan, located approximately 30 kilometers northeast of the capital Baku. It is one of the most populous settlements of the Absheron District.

Geography and Climate Mardakan is situated on the eastern part of the Absheron Peninsula, benefiting from a dry subtropical climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. Its proximity to the Caspian Sea contributes to its popularity as a coastal resort area, known for its sandy beaches.

History The history of Mardakan dates back to ancient times, with its name believed to be derived from the "Mard" tribe, an ancient people of the Absheron region. The settlement flourished during the medieval period, becoming an important point on trade routes and developing a unique architectural style characteristic of the Absheron School of Architecture. Many of its historical monuments date from this era.

Landmarks and Attractions Mardakan is renowned for its historical monuments, particularly its medieval castles and towers, which served defensive purposes. Key landmarks include:

  • Round Castle (or "Maiden Tower" of Mardakan): Built in 1232 by Abdul-Medjid, the son of Shirvanshah Akhsitan III, to commemorate his victory over enemies. It is a circular tower with a height of about 16 meters.
  • Quadrangular Castle: Built in 1187 by Akhsitan I, this larger, more robust fortress stands approximately 22 meters high. It was constructed following a successful campaign against invaders.

Beyond its castles, Mardakan is also home to several mosques, baths, and ancient wells, reflecting its long history. In the Soviet era and post-independence, it developed into a significant resort and sanatorium zone, attracting visitors for its climate, sea access, and mineral springs. The Mardakan Arboretum (Botanic Garden) is another notable site, featuring a wide variety of flora.

Economy and Tourism Tourism and recreation are central to Mardakan's economy. The town is a popular destination for both local and international visitors seeking beach holidays, health retreats, and historical exploration. Numerous hotels, guesthouses, and sanatoriums operate in the area. Agriculture, particularly olive cultivation and viticulture, also plays a role in the local economy.
