Marcel Froissart (1934–2015) was a distinguished French theoretical physicist known for his significant contributions to particle physics and high-energy scattering theory. His work primarily focused on quantum field theory and the mathematical foundations of particle interactions.
Froissart is most widely recognized for establishing the "Froissart bound" (or Froissart limit) in 1961. This fundamental principle in particle physics dictates that the total cross-section of the scattering of two high-energy particles cannot grow faster than the square of the logarithm of the energy. This discovery provided a critical constraint on the behavior of strong interactions at high energies and remains a cornerstone of modern hadronic physics.
Born in 1934, Froissart was an alumnus of the École Polytechnique and the École des Mines. He spent a significant portion of his career at the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA) in Saclay. In 1973, he was appointed to the Chair of Corpuscular Physics at the Collège de France, a position he held until his retirement in 2004. He also served as the director of the Laboratoire de Physique Corpusculaire at the Collège de France.
In addition to his work on scattering limits, Froissart contributed to the development of the Padé approximant method in physics, specifically regarding the identification of "Froissart doublets," which are pairs of poles and zeros that appear in numerical approximations of functions.
Throughout his career, Froissart was involved in international scientific cooperation, including work at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) and various academic institutions. His contributions have had a lasting impact on the understanding of asymptotic behavior in quantum mechanics and the dynamics of subatomic particles. He died on April 24, 2015.
