Marc Verwilghen

Marc Verwilghen (born 2 October 1959 in Ghent, Belgium) is a Belgian politician associated with the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Open VLD). He holds a law degree from the University of Ghent and began his professional career as a lawyer before entering politics.

Political career

  • Parliamentary service: Verwilghen was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives in 1995, serving until 1999, and returned to the chamber in 2000. He subsequently acted as president of the Open VLD parliamentary group.
  • Ministerial roles: In the federal Verhofstadt II government, he was appointed Minister of Justice (2003–2007) and subsequently held the same portfolio in the Leterme I government (2007–2008). During part of this period (2004–2007), he also served as Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium.
  • European appointment: Following his national service, Verwilghen became a member of the European Court of Auditors, representing Belgium. In this capacity he participated in audits of EU budgetary implementation and contributed to reports on financial management within the Union.

Other activities

Verwilghen has been involved in various advisory and supervisory boards related to justice, finance, and public administration. He is recognized for his work on legal reforms and anti‑corruption measures during his tenure as justice minister.

Personal life

He is married and has children. Beyond his political and professional commitments, Verwilghen maintains an interest in Flemish cultural affairs.
