María Bibiana Benítez (April 9, 1827 – May 5, 1901) was a Puerto Rican poet, writer, and early advocate for women's education. She is recognized as the first female poet in Puerto Rico and one of the island’s pioneering literary figures of the 19th century.
Early Life and Education
Benítez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, into a prominent family; her father, José Benítez, was a lawyer and politician. Details of her formal education are limited, but she received a private education typical of affluent families of the period, which included instruction in literature, poetry, and the liberal arts.
Literary Career
Benítez began composing poetry in the 1840s. Her work was published in local newspapers and literary magazines, notably La Revista de Puerto Rico and El Boletín Mercantil. Themes in her poetry include patriotism, nature, and the role of women in society. Among her most cited poems are:

Schools and streets in Puerto Rico bear her name, and her poems are included in anthologies of Caribbean and Latin American literature.
