Mantis shrimp

The mantis shrimp is a marine crustacean belonging to the order Stomatopoda, within the class Malacostraca. Over 400 species are recognized, distributed among several families, the most prominent being Gonodactylidae, Lysiosquillidae, and Squillidae. They inhabit tropical and subtropical marine environments, typically residing in shallow, sandy or coral reef habitats where they construct burrows or occupy crevices.

Morphology
Mantis shrimps possess a dorsoventrally flattened, elongated body ranging from 2 cm to over 30 cm in length, depending on species. The most distinctive features are their raptorial appendages, which are specialized for either striking (spearers) or smashing (smashers). Spearers have spiny, elongated clubs used to impale soft-bodied prey, while smashers have heavily calcified, club‑like appendages capable of delivering rapid, high‑impact blows.

Vision
Members of Stomatopoda have some of the most complex visual systems known in the animal kingdom. Their compound eyes are mounted on stalks and contain up to 16 types of photoreceptor cells, enabling detection of a broad spectrum of light, including ultraviolet, and the ability to perceive polarized light. This advanced vision assists in prey detection, navigation, and communication.

Physiology and Performance
The strike of a smasher mantis shrimp can reach accelerations of approximately 10,000 g and velocities up to 23 m s⁻¹, generating forces exceeding 1,500 N in the largest species. The rapid movement is facilitated by a spring–loaded mechanism involving a saddle-shaped exoskeletal structure (the “dactyl club”) and elastic energy storage in the meral-V, a specialized calcified region.

Behavior and Ecology
Mantis shrimps are primarily solitary predators. Their diet includes fish, mollusks, other crustaceans, and plankton, varying with morphology of the raptorial appendage. They exhibit complex burrowing behavior, constructing chambers with entrance tunnels that can be sealed for protection. Territorial displays often involve patterned limb movements and coloration.

Reproduction
Reproductive strategies differ among species but generally involve external fertilization. Females may carry fertilized eggs on specialized pleopods until hatching. Larval development proceeds through several planktonic zoeal stages before metamorphosing into the benthic adult form.

Distribution
Global distribution is concentrated in the Indo‑Pacific region, extending to the Caribbean and the western Atlantic. Species richness is highest in coral reef ecosystems, where structural complexity provides both hunting grounds and shelter.

Human Interactions
Mantis shrimps are of interest to several fields:

  • Aquaculture and Aquarium Trade: Some species are kept in marine aquaria for their striking appearance and behavior.
  • Biomimetics: The mechanics of the dactyl club have inspired research into impact‑resistant materials.
  • Culinary Use: In certain coastal cultures, mantis shrimp are harvested for food, valued for their firm, flavorful meat.

Conservation
Most mantis shrimp species are not currently listed as threatened. However, habitat degradation, especially of coral reefs and mangroves, can affect local populations. No widespread conservation measures are specifically targeted at mantis shrimps, but general marine habitat protection benefits them.
