Manohar Gajanan Joshi (born 2 December 1937) is an Indian politician who has held several prominent offices at the state and national levels. A senior leader of the Shiv Sena party, he served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999 and later as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament, from 2002 to 2004.
Early life and education
Manohar Joshi was born in Raigad district of the then Bombay Presidency (now Maharashtra), India. He completed his early education in local schools before obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree. He subsequently pursued a Master’s degree in Political Science and a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Pune.
Political career

Shiv Sena affiliation: Jos Joshi joined the Shiv Sena, a regional political party founded by Bal Thackeray, in the early 1970s. He became a key organizer in the party’s expansion across Maharashtra, particularly in the Vidarbha and Konkan regions.

State politics: He was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly multiple times, representing the Dadar constituency in Mumbai. He served in several ministerial portfolios, including Education, Industry, and Revenue, before being appointed Chief Minister.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra (1995–1999): As the first Shiv Sena chief minister, Joshi headed a coalition government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
