Mandi Bahauddin is a city and the administrative headquarters of Mandi Bahauddin District in the Punjab province of Pakistan.
Overview
Located on the eastern bank of the Jhelum River, Mandi Bahauddin lies approximately 100 km southeast of Islamabad and 70 km north of Gujrat. As of the 2017 Census of Pakistan, the urban population of the city was estimated at around 140,000 inhabitants, while the district’s total population exceeded 1.5 million. The city functions as a commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural region, with markets (mandis) dealing primarily in wheat, rice, and sugarcane. Transportation links include the National Highway N-5 (Grand Trunk Road) and a branch of the Pakistan Railways network, facilitating connections to major cities such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Mandi Bahauddin” combines two elements: “Mandi,” meaning “market” in Urdu and Punjabi, reflecting the city’s historic role as a trading centre; and “Bahauddin,” a reference to a local Sufi saint, Bahauddin Shah, whose shrine is situated near the town. The pairing of a commercial descriptor with a reverential name is common in the naming conventions of towns throughout the Punjab region.
