Manathoor is a small village in Kottayam district, Kerala, India. It lies along the Pala–Thodupuzha Highway (State Highway 8), approximately 12 km from Palai town and 15 km from Thodupuzha town. It is situated in the eastern part of Kottayam District and shares its north-eastern border with Idukki District. The locality is also known as Pizhaku.

Manathoor falls under the Kadanad Gram Panchayat and the Lalam Block. It is part of the Meenachil Taluk, the Pala Assembly constituency, and the Kottayam Lok Sabha constituency. The village is home to around 750 families, with a population of approximately 2,500. The majority of residents are Christians and Hindus, with both communities co-existing in religious harmony. Etymology
The name "Manathoor" is derived from two Malayalam words: Maanath (meaning "sky") and Ooru (meaning "place"). Historically, the area's traditional name was Pizhaku (Pizhakum Kara). The parish name led to the area becoming known as Manathoor in the early 1900s.
Religion
- St. Mary's Church (Syro-Malabar Catholic Church): The only church in the village, established in 1910, under the Eparchy of Palai. The parish includes approximately 410 families. The feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on 7 and 8 September.
- Pizhaku Thrikkayil Sri Krishna Swami Temple: An ancient Hindu temple situated near the Manathoor School Junction. A former palace (Pizhakum Kottaram) was associated with this temple.
- SNDP Temple: A newer temple dedicated to Sri Narayana Guru.
Geography and Climate
The village has an average elevation of approximately 102 meters, with terrain ranging from low-lying areas to mountains. The Pala–Thodupuzha Highway passes through a valley, with elevated areas on both sides. The climate is moderate, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 36°C. The monsoon season runs from June to November.
Economy and Agriculture
The local economy is predominantly agricultural. Major crops include rubber, coconut, pepper, and vanilla. Many families maintain rubber plantations, and there are some paddy fields.
Notable Landmarks
- Pampanal Waterfalls: A seasonal waterfall located approximately 2 km from the village via the Manathoor–Karimkunnam Shortcut Road, accessible by a 1 km footwalk. It features three cascades and is a local attraction, particularly during and after the monsoon season.
- St. Joseph's High School: A major educational institution in the area, following the Kerala State Syllabus.
- St. Joseph's Shrine (Kurishpally): Located near the School Junction, used for the Way of the Cross procession during Lent.

The village is well-connected by road. Frequent private and KSRTC buses ply the Pala–Thodupuzha route, with major stops at Manathoor School Junction and Manathoor Church Junction. The nearest railway station is Kottayam (approximately 45 km away), and the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (approximately 70 km away).
