Maldivian (horse)

Definition
Maldivian was a New Zealand‑bred, Australian‑trained Thoroughbred racehorse, best known for winning the 2008 Cox Plate and three other Group 1 races during a distinguished career.

Overview
Foaled on 20 October 2002, Maldivian was a bay gelding sired by the prominent stallion Zabeel out of the American mare Shynzi (by Danzig). Bred by Sir Patrick and Lady Justine Hogan, he was exported to Australia in April 2004 and placed under the training of Mark Kavanagh. Over 30 career starts, Maldivian recorded 9 wins, 5 seconds and 5 thirds, amassing earnings of A$2.82 million. His major victories included the 2007 Easter Cup (Group 3), the 2007 Yalumba Stakes (Group 1), the 2008 Cox Plate (Group 1), and the 2009 C F Orr Stakes (Group 1). After retiring due to a tendon injury, he spent his remaining years at Cityview Farm in Victoria and died in July 2021.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Maldivian” does not appear in the official stud or racing records to have a documented explanation. It may be a reference to the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, but accurate information on the naming rationale is not confirmed.
