Malacostraca

Malacostraca is the largest class of crustaceans, encompassing a diverse array of primarily aquatic arthropods that includes familiar groups such as crabs, lobsters, shrimp, krill, and woodlice. Members of this class are characterized by a body plan consisting of a head, thorax, and abdomen, typically bearing a total of 19–20 segments: five in the head (including the fused antennal segment), eight in the thorax, and six or seven in the abdomen, followed by a terminal telson. The head bears a pair of compound eyes, two pairs of antennae, and mouthparts specialized for a range of feeding strategies. The thoracic region usually carries eight pairs of appendages, which may be modified into maxillipeds, walking legs, or swimmerets, while the abdominal segments often bear pleopods that function in swimming, respiration, or brooding.

Malacostracans exhibit a wide range of ecological roles, occupying marine, freshwater, and terrestrial habitats. Marine species dominate the class, with many forming key components of benthic and pelagic communities; for example, krill (order Euphausiacea) are a crucial link in oceanic food webs, and decapods (order Decapoda) include many commercially important species such as the American lobster (Homarus americanus) and the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus). Freshwater representatives include various shrimp and crayfish, while terrestrial forms are represented primarily by isopods (order Isopoda) such as woodlice.

The class is subdivided into several orders, the most species‑rich being Decapoda, which contains over 15,000 described species. Other notable orders include Amphipoda, Isopoda, Euphausiacea, and Stomatopoda (mantis shrimps). Phylogenetically, Malacostraca is situated within the subphylum Crustacea and is closely related to the class Branchiopoda; molecular and morphological studies support its monophyly, although internal relationships among orders continue to be refined.

Reproduction in malacostracans varies widely. Many species exhibit direct development with brood protection, such as the egg‑carrying behavior of decapods, while others release planktonic larvae that undergo multiple molts before reaching adulthood. Molting (ecdysis) is a fundamental process for growth, regulated hormonally and often synchronized with environmental cues.

The fossil record of Malacostraca extends back to the Cambrian period, providing evidence of early diversification. Extant malacostracans play significant ecological and economic roles, contributing to nutrient cycling, serving as prey for higher trophic levels, and supporting global fisheries and aquaculture industries.
