Magnus J. Wenninger (June 19, 1919 – January 19, 2017) was an American mathematician, Catholic priest, and author best known for his work on physical models of polyhedra. His contributions lie primarily in the popularization and construction of three‑dimensional geometric models, especially those based on the Platonic, Archimedean, and Kepler–Poinsot solids.
Early life and education
Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Wenninger earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from the University of Minnesota in 1940. He subsequently entered the Catholic seminary, receiving a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1944. After ordination as a Roman Catholic priest in 1949, he completed a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign in 1957; his dissertation focused on algebraic aspects of geometry.
Academic and clerical career
Wenninger served as a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, New York, where he taught mathematics and geometry for more than three decades. In parallel, he fulfilled priestly duties as a member of the Dominican Order, combining his religious vocation with his academic interests.
Contributions to polyhedral modeling
In 1957 Wenninger published Polyhedron Models, a seminal reference that provided detailed instructions for constructing paper models of all 75 uniform polyhedra known at the time, as well as many stellations and compounds. The book’s clear diagrams and step‑by‑step procedures made high‑quality polyhedral models accessible to educators, hobbyists, and researchers. Subsequent editions expanded the collection to include newer uniform polyhedra discovered after the original publication.
Wenninger’s expertise extended to the development of educational kits and exhibitions. He collaborated with institutions such as the American Museum of Natural History and the University of Washington to produce large‑scale models for display. His work influenced the teaching of geometry by providing tangible representations of abstract concepts.
Later life and legacy
After retiring from teaching in the early 1990s, Wenninger continued to write and lecture on geometry. He authored additional books, including Dual Models (1971) and Spherical Models (1999), further exploring the relationship between polyhedra and their duals. His models are preserved in numerous university collections and have been featured in mathematical art exhibitions worldwide.
Magnus Wenninger passed away in 2017 at the age of 97. He is remembered for bridging the gap between mathematical theory and physical representation, contributing significantly to the fields of recreational mathematics and mathematical education.
