Maggie Chapman

Maggie Chapman (born 1975) is a Scottish politician who has served as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the North East Scotland region since 2021. A prominent figure within the Scottish Green Party, she previously served as the party's co-convener from 2013 to 2019 and as a councillor for the Fountainbridge/Craiglockhart ward on Edinburgh City Council from 2007 to 2015.

Early Life and Education

Born in New Zealand in 1975, Chapman pursued her higher education at the University of Auckland, where she earned a degree in Political Science. She moved to Scotland in 1997 and later completed a PhD at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on the social and political impacts of global food systems.

Political Career

Chapman's political career began in local government when she was elected as a Scottish Green Party councillor for the Fountainbridge/Craiglockhart ward in Edinburgh City Council in 2007. During her eight years on the council, she was involved in various committees and championed issues such as public transport, cycling infrastructure, and affordable housing.

In 2013, Chapman was elected as co-convener of the Scottish Green Party, serving alongside Patrick Harvie. During her six-year tenure in this leadership role, she played a key part in raising the party's profile and electoral success, including the election of six Green MSPs to the Scottish Parliament in 2016. She stepped down as co-convener in 2019, though she remained an active voice within the party.

After several attempts to be elected to the Scottish Parliament, Chapman successfully secured a seat as an MSP for the North East Scotland region in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election. As an MSP, she has focused on issues including climate change, biodiversity, human rights, and social justice, often scrutinising government policy and advocating for Green Party principles within Holyrood.

Beyond her direct political roles, Chapman has held several other public and academic positions. She served as Rector of the University of Aberdeen from 2014 to 2018, a role that involves representing the interests of the student body. She has also contributed to various public policy discussions and academic forums on environmentalism and social justice.

Chapman is known for her strong advocacy for environmental protection, a just transition away from fossil fuels, and measures to tackle climate change.
