Magdalena Moons (24 January 1541 – 15 June 1613) was a Dutch woman known for her role in the relief of Leiden during the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648). She is considered a heroine associated with the Leidens Ontzet (Relief of Leiden).
Life and Background
Moons was born in The Hague as the daughter of Pieter Moons (1488–1545), an advocaat-fiscaal (prosecutor) for the Hof van Holland, and Johanna van Lennep. She came from a Catholic and well-to-do family. After her father's death when she was five years old, she remained in The Hague with her mother.
Role in the Siege of Leiden
During the second Spanish siege of Leiden in 1574, the city was on the verge of starvation and surrender. At that time, the Spanish commander Francisco de Valdez (c. 1511–1580) had taken The Hague and was directing the siege. According to historical accounts, Moons, who had relatives within the besieged city, promised to marry the much older Valdez on the condition that he delay the final assault on Leiden. Valdez agreed to postpone the attack, reportedly for one night. This delay proved decisive: during that time, the wind shifted, allowing the Dutch Water Beggars (Geuzen) to flood the polders around Leiden and sail relief into the city on 3 October 1574, breaking the Spanish siege.
Historical Veracity and Legacy
The story was widely known and recounted on both sides during the war. However, male historians in later centuries often dismissed it as legend or romantic fiction. In 2014, historian Els Kloek published research in the Digitaal Vrouwenlexicon van Nederland demonstrating that the marriage between Moons and Valdez did indeed take place, lending substantial weight to the core historical account. Moons later married Jurriaen van Lennep after Valdez's death. She died in Utrecht in 1613.
Magdalena Moons remains a celebrated figure in Dutch historical memory, particularly in Leiden, where the annual 3 October festival commemorates the city's relief.
