Mackworth Island is a 100‑acre (approximately 0.4 km²) island and state park located in Casco Bay, adjacent to the town of Falmouth, Maine, United States. The island is connected to the mainland by a 418‑foot (127 m) causeway that carries Route 88.
Geography and Environment
The island consists of a mix of forested areas, rocky shoreline, and a central pond. It supports a variety of New England wildlife, including white‑tailed deer, red foxes, and numerous bird species such as bald eagles and various seabirds. The surrounding waters are part of the larger Casco Bay ecosystem.
History
The island was originally known as “Musketa” by the indigenous Abenaki peoples. In the 18th century it was granted to English settlers and later became part of the estate of Governor James Phinney Baxter, who purchased the island in 1905. In 1933, Baxter donated the island to the state of Maine to be used as a public park. The donation stipulated that the island be used for “the welfare of the people of the Commonwealth of Maine” and that a “Mackworth Island School” be established for the education of children.
Facilities and Use
Mackworth Island State Park is open year‑round and provides a range of recreational amenities, including:
- A 2‑mile (3.2 km) loop trail that encircles the island, popular for hiking and birdwatching.
- A small beach and dock area for swimming and non‑motorized boating.
- Picnic tables, benches, and a seasonal interpretive center.
- The Mackworth Island School, a private day school for grades K‑5, which occupies historic buildings on the island.
The island’s managed landscape includes both natural and cultivated areas, with efforts by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry to preserve native habitats and control invasive species.

Mackworth Island State Park is administered by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. The department oversees maintenance of trails, facilities, and conservation programs, while the Mackworth Island Trust, a nonprofit organization, assists with fundraising and educational initiatives.
Cultural Significance
The island is a noted local landmark and frequently features in regional tourism literature as an example of coastal recreation in Maine. It has also been used as a location for community events, educational field trips, and environmental research projects.
