MTV Live (previously known as MTVNHD and MTV Live HD) was a 24-hour, high-definition, live music pay television network and the international version of the American channel MTV Live, owned and operated by Paramount Networks EMEAA. It was the first international HD channel dedicated to music videos.
Overview
MTV Live offered a mix of programming from MTV Europe, including original and acquired content from MTVNI's extensive library. Its schedule featured shows produced by MTV production units in Southern Europe, the UK, and Latin America. The channel broadcast in English with a 1080p HDTV picture format.
History
The channel launched on 15 September 2008 in parts of Europe under the name MTVNHD (MTV-Nickelodeon HD), initially splitting its programming between music and children's content. By the end of 2008, it became available in Latin America, and throughout 2010 it expanded to more countries including Australia.
On 1 July 2011, MTVNHD was rebranded as MTV Live HD as part of a global rebranding effort, though the UK and Ireland retained the MTVNHD name until 23 April 2012. On 14 September 2021, the channel was renamed simply MTV Live, dropping "HD" from its branding.
Initially managed by MTVNI's Emerging Markets group, the channel was produced and broadcast from its Warsaw hub until 22 April 2012, when operations moved to London, United Kingdom.
Closure
On 31 December 2025, after 17 years of broadcasting, MTV Live closed globally. Its final song was "Dancing on My Own" by Robyn. The closure was part of a broader shutdown of MTV's music television channels across Europe, marking the end of an era for 24-hour music video broadcasting on the network.
Availability
The channel was available in fourteen countries throughout Europe, East Asia, and Southeast Asia, including markets such as the United Kingdom, Brazil, Portugal, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and various countries in the Arab world and Latin America. It ceased operations in several markets over time, including France (2013), Australia (2013), Russia (2022), Belarus (2022), the Philippines (2024), and the Netherlands (2025), before its final global shutdown.
