MDO is a Latin American pop/rock band, spun off in 1997 from the Latin American boy band once known as Menudo. The group was formed under the direction of Edgardo Díaz, Menudo's creator and producer, after he sold the rights to the Menudo trademark to a Panamanian company.
Origin and History
The band originated from the remaining lineup of Menudo following the release and promotion of the album Tiempo De Amar in 1996. The founding members were Abel Talamántez, Alexis Grullón, Anthony Galindo, Didier Hernández, and Daniel René Weider. Their self-titled debut album MDO was released in 1997 and achieved Gold Record status.
In 1999, the band released Un Poco Más, which featured two English-language songs ("Groove With Me Tonight" and "Fantasy") in an attempt to cross over to the U.S. market. The album reached Platinum sales and hit #1 on the US Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart. The follow-up album Subir Al Cielo (2000) also achieved Platinum status and #1 on the same chart.
In 2001, MDO released their first English-language album, Little Piece of Heaven, distributed internationally through Columbia Records. The band subsequently toured Asia for a year before taking a break from the industry.
Later Activity
The band returned in 2005 with new members—Daniel Rodríguez, Elliot Suro, Luis Montes (all contestants from the Puerto Rican reality talent show Objetivo Fama), and Lorenzo Duarte—releasing the album Otra Vez. In 2008, they released Sabe A Tí, their final studio album, featuring a more mature sound with members playing instruments.
In 2011, five original members reunited for an international tour across Puerto Rico, Central America, and South America, releasing a new single titled "Ya no queda más". In 2015, the group's first lineup reunited for a celebration tour. In 2017, MDO participated in the 90s Pop Tour, and a live DVD was released through Sony Music, going Gold within hours. In 2018, the "MDO Is Back" tour took place, and the band released the single "Enamorao".
