Márton Berzeviczy de Berzevicze et Kakaslomnicz (1538 – 16 February 1596) was a Hungarian nobleman and diplomat who served as Chancellor of the Principality of Transylvania under Prince Stephen Báthory from January 1578 until 1586.
Early life and education
Berzeviczy was born in 1538 in Berzevice, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary (present‑day Brezovica, Slovakia), into an old noble family of German origin. He was the son of Kristóf Berzeviczy and Katalin Bertóthy. In 1558 he began his public service as a recorder for Palatine Tamás Nádasdy. The following year he entered the Hungarian Court Chancellery in Vienna. Between 1559 and 1560 he pursued studies at the University of Halle‑Wittenberg in the Holy Roman Empire.
Diplomatic and political career
Berzeviczy’s career was marked by extensive diplomatic activity on behalf of the Transylvanian principality. In 1578 he was appointed Chancellor of Transylvania, a senior office responsible for the administration of the chancellery and the conduct of foreign affairs. He held the position throughout the early reign of Stephen Báthory, who later became King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, and was succeeded in the chancellorship by Farkas Kovacsóczy in 1586.
Personal life
In 1578 Berzeviczy married Katalin Woianowski, a German‑Polish noblewoman. The couple had three children.
Death
Márton Berzeviczy died on 16 February 1596 in Osiek, within the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth, at the age of 57 or 58.
Legacy
Berzeviczy is remembered as a significant figure in 16th‑century Hungarian and Transylvanian politics, notable for his role in the diplomatic relations between the Principality of Transylvania and the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth during a period of complex regional politics.
