Mário Costa Barberena (17 April 1934 – 16 December 2013) was a Brazilian paleontologist and geologist noted for his contributions to the study of South American fossil vertebrates and for his involvement in the Paleorrota Geopark.

Early life and education
Born in Santa Vitória do Palmar, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Costa Barberena completed a degree in Natural History at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (1956–1959). He later earned a doctorate in stratigraphic paleontology from Harvard University (1977–1978).
