Lygephila craccae is a species of moth in the family Erebidae, subfamily Erebinae. The species was first described by Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller in 1775 under the binomial Noctua craccae. It is predominantly found throughout much of Europe, extending into parts of western and central Asia.

Description
Adult moths have a wingspan ranging from 35 to 43 mm. The forewings are typically brownish‑grey with a complex pattern of darker transverse lines and a characteristic, faintly contrasting reniform (kidney‑shaped) stigma. Hindwings are paler, often showing a subtle discal spot. The overall coloration provides camouflage against bark and leaf litter.
Distribution and Habitat
Lygephila craccae occupies a variety of habitats, including deciduous woodlands, shrublands, meadows, and cultivated areas where host plants are present. Its range extends from the British Isles and Scandinavia in the north, through central and southern Europe, to the Caucasus, Siberia, and parts of the Middle East.
Life Cycle and Ecology
- Adult Flight Period: Adults are typically on the wing from late July through September, with a single generation per year in most of its range.
- Larval Host Plants: Caterpillars feed on a broad spectrum of herbaceous plants, notably species of the genera Vicia (vetches), Lathyrus (sweet peas), Medicago (alfalfa), and various legumes.
- Overwintering: The species overwinters in the pupal stage, often concealed in leaf litter or shallow soil.
Conservation Status
The species is not currently listed as threatened on a global scale and is generally considered common or locally abundant throughout much of its distribution. No significant population declines have been documented.
