Luriyani

Luriyani is a Bantu language spoken primarily in Kenya, by the Luhya people of the larger Luhya community. It is also referred to as Luluhya, although Luluhya more broadly refers to the group of closely related languages and dialects spoken by the Luhya people. Luriyani, in a more specific sense, refers to the dialect or language spoken by the Abanyala (of Navakholo constituency, Kakamega County) and the Marama subgroups of the Luhya.

As a Bantu language, Luriyani shares typological features with other languages in the family, including agglutination, noun classes, and subject-verb-object word order. Understanding Luriyani requires familiarity with its unique phonological and grammatical rules, which distinguish it from other Luhya languages and dialects. Efforts are ongoing to preserve and promote the Luriyani language through documentation, education, and literacy programs. The classification of Luriyani as a distinct language versus a dialect within the broader Luhya language group is a matter of ongoing linguistic discussion and often influenced by socio-political factors.
