Luoxi Island (Chinese: 洛溪岛; pinyin: Luòxī Dǎo) is an island located in the northern part of the Panyu District in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. It is an alluvial island situated within the Pearl River system.
Geography and Location
Luoxi Island is positioned between the urban core of Guangzhou and the southern suburban reaches of Panyu. It is bounded to the north by the back channel of the Pearl River, which separates it from the Haizhu District. To the west, it is separated from Nanpu Island by a narrow channel, and to the south, it is bordered by the Sanzhijiao Channel. The island's geography is characterized by flat, low-lying terrain typical of the Pearl River Delta.
Urban Development
Historically an agricultural and fishing area, Luoxi Island underwent rapid urbanization starting in the late 1980s. This transformation was part of a broader strategy to expand Guangzhou's residential capacity southward. The island became one of the earliest "bedroom communities" for the city, featuring large-scale residential developments such as Luoxi New City and Riverside Garden (Panyu Bijun).
In recent years, urban planning for the island has shifted toward high-end residential use, commercial services, and the protection of its waterfront environment. Some industrial sites and older village structures remain, though many are subject to ongoing urban renewal projects.
Transportation
Luoxi Island serves as a vital transportation link between central Guangzhou and Panyu District.
- Road: The island is connected to Haizhu District via several major bridges, including the Luoxi Bridge (opened in 1988), the Xinguang Bridge, and the Panyu Bridge. These routes are primary arteries for north-south vehicular traffic in the city.
- Public Transit: The island is served by the Guangzhou Metro system. Luoxi Station on Line 2 provides direct access to the Guangzhou South Railway Station and the city's central business districts. Additionally, several bus routes operate across the island, linking it to various parts of the Pearl River Delta.
Administration
Administratively, Luoxi Island falls under the jurisdiction of Luoxi Township (Luoxi Jiedao) within Panyu District. It is integrated into the municipal planning of Guangzhou, focusing on balanced ecological preservation and residential density.
