Lumpenus is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Stichaeidae, commonly known as pricklebacks. These fish are characterized by their elongated, eel-like bodies and are found predominantly in the cold waters of the North Pacific Ocean, extending into the Arctic.
Description
Species within the genus Lumpenus typically possess slender, laterally compressed bodies that can reach lengths of up to 50 centimeters, depending on the species. They are covered in very small, often embedded scales. A distinguishing feature is a long dorsal fin that extends almost the entire length of the back, usually supported by numerous flexible spines and soft rays. The anal fin is also long but shorter than the dorsal fin. Pelvic fins, if present, are small and located anteriorly. Their coloration varies but often includes mottled patterns of brown, grey, or olive to blend with their benthic habitats. They typically have a relatively small mouth and prominent eyes.
Habitat and Distribution
Lumpenus species are demersal fish, meaning they live on or near the seabed. They inhabit temperate to subarctic waters of the North Pacific Ocean, ranging from the coasts of North America (Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California) to Asia (Russia, Japan, Korea), and extending into the Arctic Ocean. They are commonly found in shallow coastal areas, estuaries, and intertidal zones, as well as at greater depths on sandy, muddy, or rocky bottoms.
Biology and Ecology
Pricklebacks of the genus Lumpenus are generally carnivorous, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates such as crustaceans (e.g., amphipods, copepods, isopods), worms, and mollusc larvae found in the substrate. They are often preyed upon by larger fish, marine mammals, and seabirds. Reproduction typically involves external fertilization, with females laying demersal eggs that adhere to the substrate or are guarded by the male in some species. Their elongated body shape allows them to navigate through crevices and dense vegetation, providing shelter and aiding in foraging.
Species
As of current ichthyological classification, notable species within the genus Lumpenus include:
- Lumpenus fabricii (Arctic shanny)
- Lumpenus sagitta (Snake prickleback)
- Lumpenus maculatus (Mottled prickleback)
- Lumpenus lampretaeformis (Eel-like prickleback)
These species are important components of their respective marine ecosystems, contributing to the food web and biodiversity of the North Pacific and Arctic regions.
