Lower Tully is a rural locality in the Cassowary Coast Region of Queensland, Australia. It lies on the lower reaches of the Tully River, approximately 20 km south‑west of Innisfail and about 1 600 km north‑north‑west of Brisbane.
Geography
The locality is bounded to the north by the Tully River, which flows eastward toward the Coral Sea. The terrain consists primarily of flat to gently undulating agricultural land, with a climate classified as tropical savanna (Köppen Aw). The surrounding region supports sugarcane cultivation, banana plantations, and pasture for cattle.
Administrative status
Lower Tully falls within the local government area (LGA) of the Cassowary Coast Region. In terms of state representation, it is part of the electoral district of Hill, while federally it is included in the Division of Kennedy.
Demographics
According to the 2021 Australian Census, Lower Tully had a recorded population of 198 persons. The median age was 38 years, and the majority of residents identified as being born in Australia. Employment figures indicated a predominance of work in agriculture, particularly in sugarcane and banana production.
Infrastructure
Road access is provided primarily by the Bruce Highway (A1), which passes to the east of the locality, linking it to larger centres such as Innisfail and Cairns. The Tully Sugar Mill, located in the adjacent town of Tully, processes much of the sugarcane grown in the area. Educational facilities are available in nearby Innisfail; there is no primary or secondary school directly within Lower Tully.
History
The name “Lower Tully” derives from its position on the lower course of the Tully River. European settlement in the area began in the late 19th century, driven by the expansion of the sugar industry. The locality has remained predominantly agricultural, with limited residential development.
Environment
The proximity to the Tully River provides habitats for a range of freshwater fish species and supports riparian vegetation. The region experiences a wet season from December to April, during which heavy rainfall can lead to riverine flooding.
