Lower Macungie Township is a township in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area, which had a population of approximately 861,899 as of the 2020 U.S. Census, making it the 68th‑largest metropolitan region in the nation.
Geography
- Total area: 28.0 sq mi (72.5 km²), of which 27.9 sq mi (72.2 km²) is land and 0.1 sq mi (0.3 km²) is water.
- The township lies in the southeastern part of Lehigh County and borders the boroughs of Macungie and Emmaus, as well as the townships of Upper Macungie, Upper Saucon, and Salisbury.

History
- The area that now comprises Lower Macungie Township was originally inhabited by the Lenape (Delaware) people. European settlement began in the early 18th century, primarily by German and Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants.
- The township was officially incorporated in 1850 after splitting from the larger Macungie Township, which itself had been organized in 1810. The name “Macungie” is derived from the Lenape word Machkunge meaning “bear swamp” or “a place of bears.”
