Lowe's

Lowe's Companies, Inc., commonly known as Lowe's, is an American retail company that specializes in home improvement. Headquartered in Mooresville, North Carolina, it is the second-largest hardware chain in the world, behind its primary competitor, The Home Depot, and the second-largest overall retailer in the United States.

History

Lowe's was founded in 1921 by Lucius S. Lowe in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, as "Lowe's North Wilkesboro Hardware." Initially, the store sold a general line of hardware, but following World War II, under the leadership of Lowe's son-in-law, Carl Buchan, the company began to focus increasingly on building materials and home improvement supplies to cater to the post-war housing boom. The first Lowe's store dedicated solely to home improvement was opened in 1949. The company expanded throughout the mid-20th century, and in 1961, it became a publicly traded company. By 1989, Lowe's had opened its 300th store and continued to grow its footprint across the United States.

Operations and Business Model

In addition to product sales, Lowe's provides various services, including installation services for major home improvement projects (e.g., kitchen and bath remodels, flooring, window replacement), tool rental, and design services. The company also maintains a robust online retail presence, offering delivery and in-store pickup options.

Lowe's primarily operates throughout the United States, with stores in all 50 states. It also has a significant international presence, operating stores in Canada. Over the years, Lowe's has explored and, in some cases, exited other international markets, such as Mexico and Australia.
