Louisa Anne Meredith (née L'Estrange; 15 August 1812 – 6 October 1895) was a British-born writer, watercolorist, and social reformer who spent much of her later life in New Zealand. She is noted for her travel literature, natural history observations, and illustrations documenting early colonial New Zealand.
Early life and education
- Born in London, England, to a family of the Irish gentry; her father was Major Francis L'Estrange of the 7th Royal Irish Regiment.
- Received a private education typical of women of her social class, including drawing and literature.
Marriage and move to New Zealand
- In 1836, she married Thomas Campbell Meredith, a barrister and later a member of the New Zealand Legislative Council.
- The couple emigrated to the colony of New Zealand in 1851, initially settling in the Auckland region before moving to the Waikato district.
Literary and artistic work
- Produced a series of travelogues and natural history sketches based on her observations in New Zealand, the most notable being "First Drawings of New Zealand" (published 1853) and "My First Voyage" (1860).
- Her writings combined descriptive narrative with scientific notes on flora, fauna, and Māori customs, offering contemporary readers insight into the early colonial environment.
- Meredith’s watercolors, characterized by delicate detail and an emphasis on botanical accuracy, were exhibited in both New Zealand and Britain.

Later years and legacy
- Returned to England in the 1880s, where she continued to write and lecture about New Zealand.
