Lonny Baxter

Lonny Baxter (born June 16, 1979) is an American former professional basketball player. He played collegiate basketball for the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the Terrapins' 2002 NCAA national championship team. Baxter was selected in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft, 45th overall, by the Chicago Bulls.

Early life and education
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Baxter attended Colonel Richardson High School, where he earned All-Metro honors. He enrolled at the University of Maryland in 1999 and played four seasons with the Terrapins, graduating with a degree in criminology.

College career
During his tenure at Maryland, Baxter was known for his defensive presence and rebounding ability. He averaged 6.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game over his collegiate career. In his senior year, he contributed to Maryland's first-ever NCAA men's basketball championship, defeating the University of Indiana in the final.

Professional career
Following the 2002 NBA Draft, Baxter signed with the Chicago Bulls but did not appear in regular‑season games. He subsequently played for the Bulls' developmental league affiliate, the Asheville Altitude, where he helped the team win the 2003 NBDL championship. Baxter's professional career continued overseas, with stints in Europe and Asia, including contracts with:

  • Panellinios B.C. (Greece) – 2004–2005
  • Ventspils (Latvia) – 2005–2006
  • Al Kuwait (Kuwait) – 2007–2008

He retired from professional basketball in 2010.

Post‑playing career
After retiring, Baxter returned to Maryland and has been involved in community outreach programs focusing on youth mentorship and basketball coaching. He has also participated in alumni events for the University of Maryland’s basketball program.

Personal life
Baxter is married and has children. He remains active in local charitable initiatives, particularly those aimed at promoting education and sports participation among under‑privileged youth.
