Long Mott is an unincorporated community located in Calhoun County in the U.S. state of Texas. It lies south of the intersection of Texas State Highway 185 and Farm to Market Road 2235 in the western part of the county, near Guadalupe Bay. The community is part of the Victoria, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area was settled by German immigrants beginning in 1853. Early settlers established two farms on a tract known locally as the “Upper Mott” and “Lower Mott,” which gave the community its name. Long Mott remained a small agricultural settlement throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Demographics
According to the Handbook of Texas, Long Mott had an estimated population of 76 residents in the year 2000. More recent census data specific to the community are not separately reported because it is unincorporated.
Geography and Climate
The community sits at an elevation of approximately 26 feet (7.9 m) above sea level. It falls within the Central Time Zone (UTC‑6 standard time, UTC‑5 daylight saving time). The area code serving Long Mott is 361. Its geographic coordinates are 28°28′57″ N latitude and 96°45′38″ W longitude.
Education
A school was founded in Long Mott in 1892 to serve local children. In 1955 the Long Mott school district merged with the broader Calhoun County Independent School District, after which students were bused to schools in nearby Port Lavaca.
Infrastructure and Development
The community’s location along State Highway 185 provides road connectivity to surrounding towns and the Gulf Coast region. In recent years the area has been referenced in connection with a proposed advanced nuclear project (Long Mott Generating Station) located elsewhere in Calhoun County, though this development does not directly affect the residential core of Long Mott.
