Definition
Long Branch Loop is a streetcar turning loop and transit hub operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) that serves as the western terminus of the 501 Queen streetcar route in the Long Branch neighbourhood of Etobicoke, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Overview
Located at the intersection of Lakeshore Road (formerly Lakeshore Avenue) and Long Branch Road, the loop provides a place for streetcars to reverse direction, board and alight passengers, and connect with local bus services. It is situated near the shore of Lake Ontario and serves residential and commercial areas of the Long Branch district, as well as nearby recreational facilities such as the Long Branch Beach.
Etymology / Origin
The name derives from the Long Branch neighbourhood, which was named in the late 19th century after the Long Branch area in England, itself referencing a “long branch” of a river or coastal inlet. The loop adopted the neighbourhood’s name upon its construction.
Characteristics
- Transit Services: Primarily serves the 501 Queen streetcar line; additional TTC bus routes (e.g., 48 Lansdowne, 110 Islington North) stop nearby, providing multimodal connections.
- Physical Layout: Consists of a single‑track loop with a small shelter for waiting passengers and a modest passenger‑information display. The loop allows streetcars to turn around without reversing.
- Accessibility: The shelter and platform are at street level; however, the loop does not feature elevators or ramps beyond the standard curb height, reflecting the design standards of older TTC streetcar infrastructure.
- Historical Development: The loop was established in the early 20th century as part of the expansion of streetcar service to Toronto’s western suburbs. It has undergone minor upgrades, such as platform resurfacing and signage replacement, but retains its original configuration.
