The London Road Viaduct is a historic railway viaduct located in Darlington, County Durham, England. It carries the East Coast Main Line over the River Skerne and the adjacent road network near London Road.
Design and construction
- Constructed between 1824 and 1825 as part of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world’s first public railway to use steam locomotives.
- Designed under the direction of George Stephenson, a pioneering civil engineer of the early railway age.
- The structure consists of ten stone arches, each spanning approximately 12 m (39 ft). The total length of the viaduct is about 108 m (355 ft), and it reaches a maximum height of roughly 15 m (49 ft) above the river.
- Built from locally quarried sandstone, the arches are supported by robust piers with cutwaters to reduce water resistance.
Historical significance
- The viaduct is an early example of railway bridge engineering and contributed to the success of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened on 27 September 1825.
- It remains one of the few surviving early‑19th‑century railway viaducts in the United Kingdom, illustrating the transition from cast‑iron to masonry bridge construction.
Heritage status
- Designated a Grade II* listed building in 1970, recognizing its particular architectural and historic interest.
- Also scheduled as an ancient monument, affording it legal protection against unauthorized alteration.
Current use
- The viaduct continues to carry active railway traffic on the East Coast Main Line, accommodating both passenger and freight services.
- Maintenance is performed by Network Rail, with routine inspections ensuring structural integrity while preserving historical fabric.
